18 Bangladeshis Detained In South 24 Parganas
Police in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district detained 18 Bangladeshi nationals, including six children, after receiving a tip-off on Tuesday night. Officials said the group was found in Kultali and taken for questioning as part of the state’s wider action against illegal immigration.
According to preliminary questioning, the detainees claimed to be from Bangladesh and allegedly entered India by crossing the border fencing with the help of agents. Police sources said some of them had been staying in Kultali for nearly three to three-and-a-half years and were reportedly working in local brick kilns.
Verification And Holding Centre Process
Authorities will now verify their identity documents and background details before taking the next step. After verification, the detainees are expected to be moved to a designated holding centre, where administrative procedures for repatriation to Bangladesh will begin.
Bengal Expands Deportation Framework
The action comes after the state directed district administrations to set up holding centres for foreign nationals awaiting deportation. The move is part of a structured “Detect, Detain and Deport” approach aimed at handling undocumented foreign nationals through legal and administrative procedures.
