Vijay’s Mullivaikkal Day Tribute Puts Sri Lankan Tamil Rights Back In Focus
Vijay Pays Tribute On Mullivaikkal Day
TVK chief C Joseph Vijay paid tribute to LTTE founder Velupillai Prabhakaran on Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day 2026, bringing the Sri Lankan Tamil rights issue back into political focus in Tamil Nadu. Observed on May 18 by Sri Lankan Tamils across the world and by sections of Tamils in India, the day remembers the victims of the final phase of the Sri Lankan civil war in 2009.
In a post on X, Vijay said the memories of Mullivaikkal would remain in people’s hearts and added that he would continue to stand with the rights of Tamils living across the sea. His statement came on the anniversary of Prabhakaran’s death in Mullivaikkal, where he was killed by the Sri Lankan army on May 18, 2009.
Sri Lankan Tamil Issue In Focus
The Sri Lankan civil war lasted nearly three decades and began with demands for a separate homeland by Sri Lankan Tamils who alleged discrimination. The conflict ended in 2009 after heavy civilian casualties in Mullivaikkal, which is also remembered as Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day.
Vijay’s remarks have drawn political attention in Tamil Nadu, where parties have often handled the Sri Lankan Tamil issue cautiously. The LTTE remains banned in India for its role in the 1991 assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Despite the sensitive history, Vijay has continued to speak about the rights and dignity of Eelam Tamils.
