The announcement was made during Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 25, 2026. Director Ryan Coogler introduced Jonsson as the new Black Panther, beginning a fresh chapter for one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most influential franchises.

Marvel has not released a complete cast list, but several important names are already connected to the film.
David Jonsson is officially leading the movie as the new T’Challa and Black Panther. Letitia Wright and Winston Duke joined Coogler during the Comic-Con announcement, indicating that Shuri and M’Baku will continue to play important roles in Wakanda’s story.
Denzel Washington is also connected to the project. Washington previously disclosed that Coogler had written a part specifically for him, and Coogler later publicly discussed the collaboration. However, Marvel has not revealed Washington’s character or confirmed how large his role will be.
The return of Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia has not yet been formally announced. Other franchise characters, including Okoye, Namor and members of the Dora Milaje, also remain unconfirmed.
What Will Black Panther 3 Be About?
Marvel has not released a full synopsis or identified the movie’s villain. The only confirmed story detail is that the younger T’Challa will be shown growing up and accepting the responsibilities connected to his family’s legacy.
That premise suggests the film could explore succession, identity, and the pressure of becoming Wakanda’s protector. The younger prince may also have to understand his relationship with Shuri, who became the Black Panther after her brother’s death.
It remains unclear how Marvel will explain the character’s transition from a young child in Wakanda Forever to an adult played by Jonsson. The events of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars could affect the MCU timeline, but Marvel has not confirmed any such connection.
Reports claiming that the movie will involve mutants, aliens, cosmic civilisations or expanded supernatural elements should currently be treated as speculation. Marvel’s official Comic-Con announcement did not confirm those plot points.
Who Is T’Challa’s Son?
T’Challa’s son was introduced during the closing sequence of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Nakia presents the child to Shuri in Haiti and explains that she and T’Challa wanted him to grow up away from the political pressure surrounding Wakanda’s throne.
The child is known in Haiti as Toussaint. He later tells Shuri that his Wakandan name is Prince T’Challa, son of King T’Challa. The reveal allowed the MCU to preserve the original hero’s name while creating a separate character who could eventually inherit his legacy.
Jonsson will portray the adult version of this character in Black Panther 3.
Does T’Challa Have a Son in Marvel Comics?
The MCU’s Toussaint is not a direct adaptation of a child from Marvel’s main comic-book continuity.
Alternate Marvel universes have featured Azari T’Challa, the son of Black Panther and the X-Men hero Storm. Azari appears as part of the Next Avengers and has inherited abilities connected to both parents.
However, Azari is from an alternate reality, while the MCU character is the son of T’Challa and Nakia. Toussaint and Azari should therefore be considered different characters unless Marvel establishes a connection later.
Why Black Panther 3 Matters for the MCU
The original Black Panther earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide and became the first superhero film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. It also won three Oscars and established Wakanda as one of the MCU’s most important locations.
