Baruipur Case: Key Accused Killed During Police Crime Scene Reconstruction

Kolkata, July 8, 2026: The Baruipur minor girl case in West Bengal took a major turn after key accused Prabash Mondal was killed in a police encounter during a crime scene reconstruction exercise, officials said.

According to police, Mondal allegedly snatched a service weapon from a police officer, fired at the police team, and attempted to escape. Police said they retaliated, leaving him injured. He was later taken to Baruipur Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Accused Taken To Surjyapur For Reconstruction

Police said a team from Baruipur Police Station took Mondal to Surjyapur at around 12.45 am to reconstruct the sequence of events related to the case. The victim’s body had earlier been recovered from the same area.

Officials said that shortly before the reconstruction began, Mondal allegedly grabbed a firearm from a police officer and fired one round at the police team. The police then opened fire in response.

Mondal was among three people arrested in connection with the alleged rape and murder of the minor girl.

Minor Girl’s Death Sparked Local Outrage

The 12-year-old girl had gone missing on July 4. Her body was later recovered from a pond on July 5, triggering anger among local residents.

Locals accused the authorities of delay in action and demanded swift justice. Protests broke out in the area, with residents blocking the Baruipur-Joynagar Road, setting tyres on fire, and vandalising police vehicles.

Innocent Man Lynched By Mob, Police Say

The case also saw a separate mob violence incident. A man identified as Indrajit Mondal was attacked and killed by an angry crowd that suspected him of being involved in the crime.

Police later said Indrajit Mondal was not involved in the minor girl case. Three people have since been arrested in connection with the lynching.

Authorities said those involved in vandalism, violence, and the lynching would face strict legal action.

SIT Formed To Probe Case

A six-member Special Investigation Team has been formed to conduct a detailed probe into the minor girl case. The SIT is expected to examine the sequence of events, the role of the accused, and allegations of delay in the initial police response.

The case has drawn strong public and political attention in West Bengal, with demands for a fast and transparent investigation.

Chief Minister Seeks Report Within 72 Hours

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari directed Director General of Police Sidd Nath Gupta to submit a report within 72 hours. He said strict action would be taken if any negligence was found in the investigation.

The Chief Minister also met the victim’s family and reviewed the progress of the probe. He assured the family that justice would be delivered.

Adhikari also said that Indrajit Mondal, who was lynched by a mob, was innocent as per the police investigation so far and that his family would also receive justice.

Police Outpost Sought In Surjyapur

The victim’s family reportedly requested the establishment of a police outpost in Surjyapur. The Chief Minister said the demand would be considered and promised to inaugurate it during his next visit to Baruipur.

The family also sought compensation and other assistance. Officials said further announcements may be made after another meeting with the affected families.

Investigation Still Underway

The Baruipur case remains under investigation. Police officials said further action will be taken based on the SIT findings and the report submitted by senior officers.

The incident has now become a major law-and-order issue in West Bengal, with the police encounter, mob lynching, public protests and allegations of delayed action all under scrutiny.
