Delhi weather alert: IMD warns of rain and 90 kmph winds

Delhi remained on alert on June 12, 2026, after heavy rain and stormy conditions affected several parts of the national capital. The India Meteorological Department warned that Delhi could see thunderstorms, lightning, light to moderate rainfall and strong gusty winds through the day as unstable weather continued over northwest India.

Officials said strong thunderstorms may bring wind speeds of 70 to 90 kmph in some areas, while gusts could become stronger in isolated locations. The forecast also pointed to possible hail activity, cloudy skies and repeated rain spells. The weather change is linked to a Western Disturbance, which is expected to keep Delhi and nearby regions under wet conditions till June 13.

Rain and thunderstorm forecast for Delhi

For Friday, June 12, the IMD predicted a generally cloudy sky with very light to light rain during the morning and forenoon. These spells may be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds moving at 40 to 50 kmph. Some areas may experience stronger gusts during active storm periods.

Another round of similar weather is expected during the afternoon or evening. The forecast is important for office-goers, students and commuters, as sudden rain and strong winds can slow traffic, reduce visibility and cause waterlogging in low-lying areas. Residents have been advised to avoid open spaces, trees, electric poles, weak structures and temporary shelters during thunderstorm activity.

Hailstorm risk in Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh

The IMD bulletin also warned that Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh may witness hailstorm activity during June 11 and June 12. Several parts of North India are likely to remain cloudy and wet as the same weather system continues to influence the region.

The main risks for Delhi include lightning, strong winds, sudden rainfall, duststorms and possible damage to temporary structures. People planning travel or outdoor work should check official weather updates before stepping out. Authorities are expected to monitor the situation closely as weather conditions may change quickly during the day.
