Historic Bengaluru Bungalow Set For DKS Official Residence
The 160-year-old Kumarakrupa bungalow in Bengaluru is being renovated to become DK Shivakumar’s official residence. The 12-room heritage structure has brought renewed attention to one of Bengaluru’s oldest government properties, blending Karnataka politics with the city’s heritage history.
Kumarakrupa Bungalow To Become DK Shivakumar’s Official Residence
The historic Kumarakrupa Bungalow in Bengaluru is set to become the official residence of DK Shivakumar, bringing one of the city’s oldest heritage buildings back into the public spotlight.
The 160-year-old bungalow, with 12 rooms, large halls, and spacious facilities, is currently undergoing renovation by the Public Works Department. The work is expected to be completed within two months.
Located close to the traditional chief ministerial residences in Bengaluru, Kumarakrupa has so far been used as a government guest house. Once the renovation is completed, it will serve as Shivakumar’s official residence and also a place for official duties.
Historic Bungalow Under Renovation
The renovation work at Kumarakrupa bungalow includes flooring, electrical repairs, carpeting, painting, and restoration of old sections of the building.
The structure still carries its old Bengaluru charm with teakwood doors, windows, cabinets, and almirahs. Its stone-clad exterior also makes it one of the notable heritage buildings in the city.
Officials are expected to modernise the facilities needed for official use while maintaining the traditional look of the bungalow.
Why Kumarakrupa Was Selected
DK Shivakumar has reportedly chosen Kumarakrupa instead of the residences usually linked with Karnataka chief ministers, such as Krishna, Cauvery, and Anugraha.
One reason being discussed is the building’s east-facing direction, which is said to match Shivakumar’s Vaastu preference. Earlier, changes were reportedly made to his seating arrangement at Vidhana Soudha so that he could face east while carrying out official duties.
The selection of Kumarakrupa bungalow has therefore become a topic of interest not only in political circles but also among those who follow Bengaluru’s heritage buildings.
A Landmark With Bengaluru History
Kumarakrupa is among Bengaluru’s oldest surviving government properties. The building is linked to the city’s colonial-era and princely-state history, giving it a special place among heritage structures in Karnataka.
The bungalow has also been associated with important public figures over the years. Its long history, central location, and architectural style make it more than just another government residence.
With its old teakwood interiors, large rooms, and heritage design, the bungalow continues to reflect Bengaluru’s past even as it prepares for a new official role.
Files And Occupants To Be Shifted
At present, Deputy Speaker Rudrappa Lamani is staying in one of the rooms at the Kumarakrupa guest house. He is expected to shift to the new Kumarakrupa guest house.
Reports also said that some rooms currently contain files related to the alleged COVID-19 scam. These files are expected to be moved to Arogya Soudha off Magadi Road.
Heritage Value In Focus
The decision to use Kumarakrupa bungalow as an official residence has also brought attention to the need for careful preservation. Since the building is more than a century old, renovation work will have to balance official requirements with heritage protection.
As the property prepares for its new role, Kumarakrupa Bungalow is likely to remain in the spotlight for both political and historical reasons.
Once ready, the 12-room Bengaluru heritage bungalow will become a key official address for DK Shivakumar, connecting Karnataka’s current political leadership with one of the city’s most historic buildings.
