The Enforcement Directorate arrested former West Bengal minister and TMC leader Sujit Bose on May 11 in connection with the alleged municipal recruitment scam in the state. Bose was taken into custody after several hours of questioning at the ED office located at the CGO Complex in Kolkata. He is expected to be produced before a Special Court.
According to ED officials, Sujit Bose allegedly recommended nearly 150 candidates for jobs under the South Dum Dum Municipality in exchange for monetary benefits. Investigators claimed that proceeds linked to the alleged scam were traced to flats and other assets reportedly acquired through illegal transactions connected to municipal recruitments. The agency also stated that large cash deposits were identified in bank accounts allegedly linked to Bose.
The recruitment scam investigation relates to alleged irregular appointments made in several municipalities across West Bengal between 2014 and 2018. Authorities said the appointments included posts such as labourers, clerks, peons, sweepers, ambulance attendants, sanitary assistants, drivers, and helpers. The case emerged during the ED’s investigation into the teachers’ recruitment scam in West Bengal.
The ED had earlier conducted raids at multiple locations connected to the case, including Bose’s office and other premises. During searches conducted in October 2025, investigators reportedly recovered incriminating documents and seized approximately Rs 45 lakh in cash. The agency also alleged that contracts linked to municipal recruitments were awarded to a private company connected to individuals already under investigation in the scam.
Sujit Bose had previously received multiple summons from the ED during the West Bengal Assembly election campaign. He had approached the Calcutta High Court seeking exemption from appearing before the agency due to election-related commitments. After the elections concluded, he appeared before ED officials for questioning earlier this month before being arrested in the latest development in the ongoing probe.
