A tragic hit-and-run case involving 28-year-old postgraduate medical student Dr Kanike Priyanka has ended in heartbreak after she died at KIMS Hospital in Secunderabad on Sunday, August 9, following nearly a week of treatment for severe head injuries.
Priyanka, who was pursuing postgraduate medicine at GSL Medical College, was critically injured near Prasad Aditya Mall in Rajamahendravaram on August 3. She was travelling as a pillion rider on a two-wheeler with a friend when a car allegedly rammed into them.
Police said two youths had reportedly been involved in an altercation with security personnel at the mall before leaving the premises in the car. They allegedly drove recklessly and struck the two-wheeler carrying Priyanka. East Godavari SP D Narasimha Kishore said the accused allegedly hit her with the vehicle multiple times.
Medico Priyanka Battles Severe Injuries For Nearly A Week
Priyanka suffered serious head injuries and was initially admitted to a hospital in Rajahmundry. As her condition remained critical, she was shifted to KIMS Hospital in Secunderabad for advanced treatment.
Doctors continued efforts to save her, but her injuries were severe. She was later declared brain-dead before her death was confirmed on Sunday afternoon.
Amid their grief, Priyanka’s family agreed to donate her organs. The decision has added an emotional dimension to the tragedy, allowing her organs to potentially give a new lease of life to other patients. Before Priyanka’s death, while she was still fighting for her life, her father publicly expressed anguish over what he described as a lack of response from the Andhra Pradesh government.
He questioned Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and Minister Nara Lokesh, asking why none of them had visited the family or enquired about Priyanka despite the case receiving widespread attention.
He also questioned whether those accused of such serious acts could be allowed to move freely and appealed to the government to ensure justice for his daughter. Priyanka’s father also raised concerns about women’s safety and questioned Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha over the protection available to girls and women in the state.
