Govt To Summon Meta Officials Over Instagram CSAM Ads Allegations
The Central government is set to summon Meta officials after allegations surfaced that Instagram carried paid advertisements promoting child sexual abuse material in India. The issue has raised serious questions over the platform’s ad moderation system and online child safety measures.
According to the report, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has directed officials of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to seek an explanation from Meta. The move follows an investigation that claimed some Instagram ads redirected users to Telegram channels where illegal content was allegedly being sold.
BBC Investigation Raises Safety Concerns
The investigation reportedly found that certain paid ads on Instagram used disturbing search terms and links to direct users outside the platform. It also claimed that these advertisements appeared after passing through Instagram’s moderation process.
The findings have triggered concern because social media advertisements are generally expected to go through stricter checks before being shown to users. The case has now brought renewed focus on how tech platforms detect, block, and report harmful content online.
Meta Responds To Allegations
Meta said it had disabled several advertisements and suspended accounts linked to the alleged violations after reviewing the findings. The company also said it removed more ads, blocked harmful URLs, and took action against additional accounts.
Meta stated that child exploitation is a serious crime and said it continues to use technology to detect suspicious behaviour. The company also said it reports apparent child exploitation cases to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children as required under applicable laws.
Experts Call For Platform Accountability
The allegations have also prompted calls for stronger responsibility from social media companies. Former Supreme Court judge Madan Lokur reportedly said the issue raises serious concerns and suggested that the Supreme Court could take suo motu cognisance.
The case has once again highlighted the challenge of balancing platform scale, automated moderation, and user safety. While companies often rely on AI-based review systems, the controversy shows that harmful content can still slip through if moderation is not strong enough.
