India Squad Changes For Afghanistan Series Show Future Planning
India Focuses On Future Squad Plans
India’s squad for the Afghanistan ODI and Test series has created major discussion after several big names were left out. The selection shows that the team management is slowly preparing for a transition phase ahead of the 2027 World Cup and the next Test cycle.
Rishabh Pant’s absence from the ODI squad became one of the biggest talking points. Although he remains part of the Test setup, KL Rahul has been named Test vice-captain under Shubman Gill. Pant’s ODI place now looks uncertain as India already has strong wicketkeeping options like KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, and Sanju Samson.
Young Players Get Selection Boost
Mohammed Shami’s omission also raised questions, especially after his domestic and IPL appearances. Selectors currently appear to be looking at him mainly for T20 cricket, while younger pacers are being tested for longer formats.
Harsh Dubey, Gurnoor Brar, Manav Suthar, and Prince Yadav have received important opportunities, showing India’s plan to build depth in pace, spin, and all-round departments. Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel were rested, while Jasprit Bumrah was managed carefully due to workload concerns.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad also missed the ODI squad despite strong potential, mainly because India’s top order already has Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, and Ishan Kishan. Overall, the Afghanistan series squad clearly signals India’s focus on testing new options while keeping the senior core involved.
