In a significant political move, Nitish Kumar, Bihar’s Chief Minister and leader of Janata Dal (United), is set to file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha today, further intensifying political activity in Patna. The submission of his nomination papers is scheduled for 11:30 am and is expected to be accompanied by other National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidates. The presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Patna for this event adds to the significance of the occasion.
This move by Nitish Kumar, just a few months after being sworn in for his record 10th term as Bihar CM, has sparked intense speculation about his future in state politics. With rumors swirling over his successor, the filing of his Rajya Sabha nomination is seen as a pivotal moment that could influence the political equations in Bihar in the months to come.
Ahead of submitting his nomination, Nitish Kumar took to social media, thanking the people of Bihar for their unwavering support over the years. He expressed his gratitude, highlighting that their trust had enabled him to serve the state for more than two decades. He also reassured his supporters that despite the shift to the Rajya Sabha, his commitment to Bihar and its development remains steadfast.
The JD(U) has held late-night meetings to discuss its strategy for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election, with the party’s second candidate, Union Minister Ramnath Thakur, also set to file his nomination. The BJP has fielded its national president, Nitin Nabin, and Bihar unit general secretary, Shivesh Kumar, as candidates for the election. Additionally, NDA ally Upendra Kushwaha, president of the Rashtriya Lok Morcha, is contesting for another term with alliance backing. Sources within the opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) indicate that the party will also field a candidate for one of the five Rajya Sabha seats, setting the stage for a closely contested election.
The timing of Nitish Kumar’s Rajya Sabha nomination, following the NDA’s victory in the Bihar Assembly elections, has fueled further speculation about his future. Some JD(U) sources suggest that he will continue as Chief Minister at least until the Rajya Sabha election scheduled for March 16, 2026. If he is elected, Nitish Kumar would achieve a rare political feat by becoming a member of all four legislative forums both Houses of the Bihar Legislature and both Houses of Parliament, further solidifying his legacy in Indian politics.
The filing of nominations today is more than a mere parliamentary procedure; it marks the beginning of a new chapter in Bihar’s political landscape. The next few days could determine not just the fate of the Rajya Sabha election but also the future direction of Bihar’s leadership.
