Toxic Movie Review: Yash Shines but Film Lacks Emotional Depth

Toxic Movie Review: Yash Shines but Film Lacks Emotional Depth

Plot

The story revolves around Salvador, a powerful kingmaker controlling a vast empire in Goa. His brother Fernandez challenges him but meets a tragic end. Fernandez’s daughter Rebecca is married to Raya, played by Yash, who gradually becomes deeply involved in Salvador’s dangerous world.

Raya’s life changes when Nadia enters his world and he falls in love with her. Their relationship is shaken after a chain of events connected to Ganga’s death. When Raya discovers Nadia’s involvement, their bond collapses. Meanwhile, Melissa enters Raya’s troubled life, while a mysterious man named Rumi appears with an agenda against the powerful empire. The identity of Rumi, his connection with Raya and the reasons behind his mission form the central mystery of the film.

Performances

Yash is clearly the strongest element of Toxic. His screen presence, attitude, body language and intensity dominate the film. He brings visible differences to Raya and Rumi and performs the action sequences with complete conviction. His mass moments and climax sequences are designed strongly around his star image.

Kiara Advani gets one of the better-written female roles and performs the emotional portions sincerely. Her chemistry with Yash works well in several scenes. Nayanthara performs effectively in the intense and action-oriented portions, though her character lacks sufficient emotional depth. Tara Sutaria looks stylish but receives limited scope, while Rukmini Vasanth makes a pleasant impression despite an underdeveloped role. Huma Qureshi is convincing in a negative character but remains underutilized.

Technical Aspects

Rajeev Ravi’s cinematography is one of the film’s biggest strengths. The Goa sequences, snowy landscapes and large-scale action blocks give Toxic a polished and visually impressive appearance. The production design and overall scale are equally strong, with KVN Productions clearly investing heavily in creating an international-style gangster drama. The action sequences are mounted with ambition, although some become exaggerated and repetitive as the story progresses.

Music

Ravi Basrur’s background score works effectively during Yash’s elevation scenes, action blocks and dramatic moments. The score adds energy to several sequences and strengthens the film’s mass appeal. However, the songs are far less memorable. They do not leave a lasting impression and contribute little to the emotional journey of the characters.

Editing

Editing is one of the biggest weaknesses of Toxic. The Telugu version reportedly runs for around 3 hours and 14 minutes, making the film feel unnecessarily stretched. Several portions could have been shortened, particularly repetitive action sequences, secondary character tracks and scenes that do not significantly move the story forward. A reduction of around 25–30 minutes could have made the narrative much tighter and more engaging.

Positives

  • Yash’s commanding screen presence
  • Stylish cinematography by Rajeev Ravi
  • Strong production values
  • Effective background score
  • Well-mounted action sequences
  • Kiara Advani’s performance
  • Raya-Rumi mystery and final twist have potential

Negatives

  • Excessive runtime
  • Weak emotional depth
  • Overcrowded screenplay
  • Too many underdeveloped characters
  • Heavy dependence on Yash’s star image
  • Noticeable KGF-style similarities
  • Forgettable songs
  • Excessive violence and exaggerated action
  • Uneven second half

Analysis

Geetu Mohandas attempts to create a layered gangster drama involving family, love, betrayal, identity and violence, but the screenplay gives greater importance to visual style and star-driven moments than emotional storytelling. The film introduces several potentially interesting relationships, including Raya’s bond with Ganga, his romance with Nadia and the mystery surrounding Rumi, but very few of these receive enough development.

The first half introduces numerous characters and conflicts without establishing a strong emotional anchor. Instead of becoming clearer in the second half, the narrative becomes increasingly crowded with additional twists and characters. The psychological element introduced later is interesting, but it arrives too late to compensate for the chaotic storytelling.

Another major issue is the strong KGF hangover. Yash’s styling, attitude, elevation shots and mass moments frequently resemble the Rocky Bhai image audiences already associate with him. A more restrained approach focused on character development could have given Toxic a stronger individual identity.

Despite its flaws, the film contains several strong technical moments and Yash remains highly watchable. Unfortunately, impressive visuals and star power cannot fully compensate for weak writing, limited emotional connection and an exhausting runtime.

Bottom Line: Style Overload

Rating: 2/5
