Plot:
Colony Circus is set in 1996 in a government employees’ colony in Kakinada. The story follows Suryanarayana, a strict maths teacher who values respect and discipline. After feeling insulted while watching television at a neighbour’s house, he decides to buy a colour TV using his family’s savings. Soon, the TV becomes a reason for conflict as his wife wants to watch serials, his son wants cricket, and Suryanarayana wants the news. To settle the issue, his father suggests a colony election to decide TV rights.
Overview:
Colony Circus is a nostalgic short film streaming on ETV Win as part of the Katha Sudha series. Directed by Shashank Posimsetty, the film blends humour, family emotions and a meaningful message about ego, relationships and togetherness.
Performances:
Venkatesh Maha fits well into the role of Suryanarayana and brings seriousness to the character. Udvita Harsha gives a natural performance as Annapurna. Child artist Aarav is impressive and becomes one of the highlights. Kireeti, Revathi Natha and the remaining cast support the story well.
Technical Aspects:
Director Shashank Posimsetty tells a simple story in a short runtime without losing engagement. The 1996 colony atmosphere is recreated neatly, and the family conflict around the television feels relatable. Srivatsa Gorla’s cinematography captures the nostalgic setup well, while the production design adds authenticity.
Music:
JV Sudhanshu’s background score supports the emotional and humorous moments effectively. It adds warmth to the film without overpowering the story.
Editing:
Srujan Sharma Kapila’s editing keeps the film crisp and smooth. The short runtime works in favour of the story, though one small logical error related to a later-period song in a 1996 setting may be noticed.
Positives:
- Nostalgic 1996 setting
- Relatable family emotions
- Venkatesh Maha’s performance
- Child artist Aarav’s acting
- Strong climax message
- Crisp runtime
Negatives:
- Small logical mistake in period detailing
- Simple storyline
- Limited conflict depth
- May feel too light for some viewers
Analysis:
Colony Circus works because of its simple idea and emotional honesty. The film takes viewers back to a time when one television could bring an entire family or colony together. The conflict is small, but the emotions are meaningful. The humour is light, the performances are natural, and the climax delivers a clean message about ego and relationships. It may not be a big dramatic film, but as a short family watch, it leaves a pleasant impact.
Bottomline: Nostalgic Drama
Rating: 3/5
