Rajkumar Hirani has revealed that the much-awaited 3 Idiots sequel is still in the writing stage. The proposed story will reunite the original characters nearly 20 years later, but the filmmaker says production will begin only if the final script is convincing.

Sequel Story Still Being Developed

Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has shared a major update on the possible sequel to his 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots. Speaking in an interview with ANI, Hirani confirmed that his team is currently developing the story, but clarified that the project has not yet been officially finalised. He said they would discuss the film publicly only after the screenplay reaches the right stage. Although he indicated that the original cast is expected to return, he stressed that the sequel will move forward only if the completed script meets the team’s expectations.

Original Characters to Return 20 Years Later

The filmmaker explained that the sequel would not take Aamir Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi’s characters back to college. Instead, it would explore where Rancho, Farhan and Raju are approximately two decades after the events of the first film. The story is expected to focus on how their lives, friendships, ambitions and responsibilities have evolved over the years. This approach would allow the sequel to retain the emotional connection of the original while introducing conflicts relevant to the characters’ current stage of life.

Another Story Inspired the Sequel Idea

Interestingly, Hirani said the project did not begin as a planned continuation of 3 Idiots. He and his writing team were initially working on a different story when they realised that its central idea could fit the lives of the original characters. That discovery encouraged them to reshape the concept as a possible second instalment. However, Hirani made it clear that the popularity of the franchise alone would not justify making the film. Unless the story feels natural and strong enough, the sequel may not enter production.

Hirani Recalls the Munna Bhai Experience

Hirani compared the development process with his experience of making Lage Raho Munna Bhai. He recalled that the first Munna Bhai film was not originally designed to launch a franchise, particularly at a time when sequels were widely considered risky. The idea for the follow-up emerged only after Hirani found another story that suited the established characters. He believes audiences will not support a film merely because it carries the name of a successful original; the new narrative must work independently.

Released in 2009, 3 Idiots featured Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor and Boman Irani in major roles. The comedy-drama became a landmark success for its entertaining yet critical examination of academic pressure, friendship and career expectations. While anticipation for a reunion remains high, Hirani’s comments confirm that the sequel is still a developing possibility rather than an officially locked film.
