Parents and students in Kalaburagi have demanded urgent safety action after ceiling plaster collapsed inside a classroom at a Government Girls Pre-University College, injuring five students and raising fresh concerns about the condition of the building.
The incident happened while classes were underway. Reports said more than 80 first-year PUC Commerce students were inside the classroom when a portion of the ceiling plaster suddenly fell. The injured students were shifted to the Trauma Care Centre at Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences and were reported to be out of danger.
Parents Raise Safety Concerns
After the incident, parents and students questioned the safety of the college building and demanded immediate inspection of classrooms. They said students should not be forced to attend classes in rooms where ceiling damage or weak structures are visible.
The demand has become stronger because the college has a large number of girl students, including many from rural areas. Parents said student safety should be treated as a priority and not as a routine repair issue.
This incident has also raised wider concerns about the condition of older and recently built government school buildings across Karnataka.
Building Condition Under Focus
The college building has now come under scrutiny. Reports said the building was constructed only around eight years ago, but students and parents have alleged that signs of damage had been visible earlier.
Similar plaster-related incidents were also reportedly noticed in the past, though no students were injured then. The latest incident has increased fear among students and parents about using the affected classrooms.
Parents have now demanded a proper structural audit of the entire building instead of only temporary repair work.
MLA Assures Action
Local MLA Allamaprabhu Patil visited the injured students at the hospital and assured families that the issue would be taken seriously. He said he would write to the Chief Secretary of the Karnataka government seeking a detailed investigation into the construction quality and maintenance of the college building.
The incident has also put pressure on the education department and district administration to inspect school and college buildings in Kalaburagi district.
Need For Safer Classrooms
The Kalaburagi ceiling collapse has highlighted the need for regular safety checks in government educational institutions. Parents say classes should continue only in rooms that are declared safe by officials.
A full safety audit, quick repair work and long-term planning for a safer building can help restore confidence among students, parents and teachers.
