The Indian government is increasing its vigilance to prevent banned online money gaming platforms from re-entering the market by presenting themselves as e-sports. Officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) have raised concerns that some companies may attempt to bypass regulations by slightly modifying their platforms while continuing similar business models.
The concern comes after the implementation of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, which prohibits all forms of online real money games in India. Popular platforms offering such services were effectively shut down under this law. However, e-sports remain permitted, provided they meet stricter compliance requirements and operate within clearly defined guidelines.
Government officials have indicated that scrutiny will be applied to applications seeking recognition as e-sports. One key area of focus will be how winnings are distributed among participants. Authorities have clarified that games involving factors beyond a player’s skill or control—such as betting or chance—could raise red flags and face regulatory action.
While e-sports are gaining acceptance globally and are even featured in international competitions, officials emphasise the need for strict oversight to ensure that banned platforms do not misuse this category. Only games recognised under the National Sports Governance Act and based on skill, strategy, and fair competition will be allowed to operate.
Despite discussions within the gaming industry on adapting business models to fit within legal frameworks, the government remains cautious. Authorities are determined to ensure that the intent of the law is not undermined and that illegal online money gaming does not make a comeback under the guise of e-sports.
