Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Misses Series Finale
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was left out of India’s playing XI for the fifth and final T20I against New Zealand, missing another opportunity despite the series already being decided. India entered the match with an unassailable 3-1 lead but retained their established batting combination.
The 15-year-old featured in only two matches during the series. India made two changes for the finale, both in the bowling department, leaving no opening for the teenage batter.
His omission brought renewed attention to how the team balances opportunities for emerging talent with continuity for regular players.
Gautam Gambhir Defends Selection Calls
Head coach Gautam Gambhir defended his approach before the match, saying his responsibility was to make decisions that served the team’s interests.
“My job is not to make everyone happy,” Gambhir told the broadcaster, explaining that correct decisions mattered more than popular choices.
He also addressed the social media discussion surrounding selection. Gambhir emphasised the importance of providing security within the dressing room and giving players confidence that their places would not depend on outside pressure.
According to the coach, batters who had delivered consistently over a longer period deserved sustained backing, even with considerable talent competing for places.
Two Chances For The Teenage Batter
Sooryavanshi received his opportunities after Ishan Kishan was sidelined by a groin injury. His first appearance produced a single-digit score, but he responded with an attacking 45 in the third T20I.
That innings included a rapid partnership with Abhishek Sharma and offered a glimpse of his potential at the top of the order. However, Kishan’s return reduced the available space in India’s batting line-up, and Sooryavanshi missed the subsequent matches.
The finale selection underlined the management’s preference for continuity. Gambhir’s comments indicated that established performances and dressing-room stability remained central to that decision.
India Playing XI For Fifth T20I
India selected Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan as wicketkeeper, captain Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy.
Samson and Abhishek formed the opening combination, with Kishan, Iyer and Tilak providing the next batting options. Nitish and Naman added depth, while the four specialist bowlers completed the side.
For Sooryavanshi, the series ended with limited playing time despite his promising third-match contribution. His omission leaves the question of future opportunities open as India continue to manage competition for batting places.
