Sri Lanka Free ETA For Indians Begins

Sri Lanka's free ETA for Indians has officially started from May 25, 2026, allowing Indian passport holders to visit the island nation for up to 30 days without paying visa fees. The new Electronic Travel Authorisation scheme covers travellers from 40 countries and is expected to make Sri Lanka a more affordable and convenient destination for short international trips.

Indian tourists still need to apply online through the official ETA system before travelling. This means visa charges are waived, but Indian travellers must still complete the online ETA approval before arrival. Under the new rule, eligible Indian travellers can receive a 30-day tourist ETA with double-entry permission from the date of first arrival.

30-Day Double-Entry Travel Rule

The free ETA facility applies to ordinary, diplomatic, official, and service passport holders from eligible countries. Apart from India, the list includes the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Germany, Australia, Japan, Russia, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia.

The move is important for Indian tourists as India remains one of Sri Lanka’s biggest travel markets. Short flight time, beaches, affordable hotels, and easier entry rules may increase Indian arrivals further. Travellers are advised to apply only through the official Sri Lankan ETA portal to avoid fake websites, extra charges or incorrect applications.
