Former India cricket captain and former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has approached the police in Kolkata over alleged defamatory and misleading posts circulated on social media.
Ganguly filed the complaint on Monday, June 15, 2026, alleging that a Facebook page with millions of followers had been sharing content aimed at damaging his reputation. The complaint was submitted at Thakurpukur Police Station.
False ED Raid Claim Mentioned In Complaint
According to reports, one of the posts falsely claimed that the Enforcement Directorate had carried out a raid at Ganguly’s residence. Ganguly has denied the claim and said the information being circulated online was untrue.
The complaint reportedly named an unofficial Facebook page called “Sourav Ganguly Fans”. It also mentioned Sportzwiki in connection with the circulation of the alleged content.
Police To Examine Online Posts
Police are expected to examine the posts and the accounts linked to their circulation. The matter is being treated as a complaint involving alleged defamation and misleading social media content.
An immediate response from the Facebook page or the platform mentioned in the complaint was not available.
Fake Posts Against Public Figures Raise Concern
The case has brought attention back to the problem of unverified social media posts targeting well-known public figures. False claims involving celebrities, sports personalities and political leaders often spread quickly before official clarification is available.
In Ganguly’s case, the complaint focuses on the alleged reputational harm caused by the fake posts. Further action will depend on the police review of the complaint and the digital content linked to it.
