High political drama continues in Tamil Nadu following the 2026 Assembly election results, with Congress openly backing Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) as discussions over government formation intensify. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram confirmed that the party is supporting TVK to help establish a stable secular government in the state.
Chidambaram described the alliance talks as part of normal democratic coalition politics, emphasizing that Congress aims to respect the people’s mandate. He added that the party is willing to assist Vijay in securing support from other like-minded parties to ensure a stable administration. According to sources, Congress has also assured backing from Left parties, VCK, and IUML for a TVK-led government.
Meanwhile, TVK chief Vijay is expected to meet the Tamil Nadu Governor as consultations with various political parties continue. Reports indicate that discussions are also underway between TVK and AIADMK regarding possible support arrangements. AIADMK leaders have suggested that the next move rests with Vijay as negotiations continue in Chennai.
TVK delivered a strong performance in the Assembly elections, winning 108 out of 234 seats—positioning Vijay as a central figure in the state’s evolving political landscape. Preparations are reportedly underway at Nehru Indoor Stadium for a possible swearing-in ceremony, even as political activity remains intense.
Congress leaders have described the verdict as a “mandate for change” and stressed the importance of forming a secular government in Tamil Nadu. Chidambaram defended the post-poll developments, noting that coalition-building after elections is a common feature of democracies worldwide.
