Will Tamil Nadu Continue Its Opposition to NEET Under Vijay
Tamil Nadu’s strong opposition to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is expected to continue despite the shifting political landscape in the state. While M. K. Stalin and Vijay come from different political backgrounds, both leaders have consistently voiced concerns over the medical entrance examination system.
Before the introduction of NEET, Tamil Nadu followed a medical admissions process based on Class 12 board examination marks. Supporters of this system argued that it ensured more equitable access, particularly for rural and government school students, without requiring dependence on expensive coaching centres.
The rollout of NEET as a nationwide entrance exam triggered widespread resistance in the state. Political leaders and education activists argue that the system disproportionately benefits students from urban and financially stronger backgrounds who can afford private coaching. Critics also say it increases academic pressure and undermines Tamil Nadu’s long-standing social justice model in education.
Stalin repeatedly opposed NEET during his tenure, stating that it disadvantages economically weaker students and restricts opportunities for many deserving candidates. Vijay, now leading Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has echoed similar concerns in his political campaigns. He has questioned the fairness of the exam and highlighted the stress faced by students and families due to the coaching-driven ecosystem.
Vijay has also linked the NEET debate to broader educational reforms, emphasizing equal access to higher education. His campaign messaging has focused on expanding opportunities for students from ordinary backgrounds and ensuring inclusivity in the education system.
Despite intense political rivalry in Tamil Nadu, opposition to NEET remains a rare point of convergence across party lines. The ongoing debate reflects deeper concerns around fairness, merit, accessibility, and the impact of centralized examinations on students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.
