Iraq Corruption Crackdown: Cash, Gold Seized From Homes Of MPs And Officials
Iraq’s major anti-corruption crackdown has triggered global attention after authorities reportedly recovered large amounts of cash, gold, and other assets during raids linked to politicians and senior government officials.
The operation, carried out in Baghdad’s heavily guarded Green Zone, comes as Prime Minister Ali Al Zaidi’s government pushes ahead with a wider campaign against alleged corruption networks. According to reports, several lawmakers and officials were detained after judicial warrants were issued in connection with suspected misuse of public funds.
Cash And Gold Found During Iraq Raids
The crackdown gained wider attention after reports said more than 20 billion Iraqi dinars, along with gold, were seized from the home of Iraqi lawmaker Alia Nassif. Gulf News reported that Nassif and her son were arrested as part of the operation.
Visuals circulating on social media appeared to show stacks of cash, but some outlets have noted that larger claims linked to the videos have not been independently verified. The National reported that the government has not released a final official total for all seized funds.
Baghdad Green Zone Raids Target Senior Figures
Reuters reported that elite units from Iraq’s Counter Terrorism Service carried out overnight raids inside Baghdad’s Green Zone, where many senior government officials and political leaders maintain offices or residences.
Iraq’s state news agency, cited by Reuters, said 47 suspects were detained, including members of parliament and government officials. Anadolu Agency also reported that 13 lawmakers were among those arrested on corruption charges.
Arrests Linked To Wider Corruption Probe
The arrests were reportedly linked to statements made by former Deputy Oil Minister Adnan Al Jumaili, who had been detained earlier on corruption charges. Investigators are said to be looking into suspected networks involving public funds, political influence, and government departments.
Among the officials named in reports was Deputy Oil Minister for Distribution Affairs Ali Maarij. Reuters noted that the US had earlier imposed sanctions on Maarij in May, while Iraq’s Oil Ministry had denied the allegations at the time.
Prime Minister Says Crackdown Will Continue
Prime Minister Ali Al Zaidi, who took office in May 2026, has described corruption as one of the government’s biggest challenges. The National reported that he called the recent arrests only the “first phase” of the campaign and warned that no corrupt official would have immunity.
The government has also indicated that recovered money will be directed into official channels as investigations continue.
