Delhi-NCR Dust Storm Triggers IMD Red Alert, Light Rain To Follow
New Delhi, June 23, 2026: A severe dust storm swept across Delhi-NCR on Tuesday afternoon, bringing strong winds, low visibility, and a sudden change in weather conditions. The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for parts of the region, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and light rain.
The weather changed sharply around 2:30 pm as thick dust clouds covered several areas of Delhi and nearby NCR cities. Strong gusts reduced visibility on roads and forced many residents to remain indoors. The IMD warned that squally winds could reach around 80 to 100 kmph in some areas during the peak of the storm.
Dust Storm Hits Delhi-NCR
The intense dust storm affected several parts of Delhi-NCR, including areas in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad. Roads and residential areas were covered in dust as winds picked up speed within minutes.
The red alert was issued as a short-term warning for severe weather conditions. According to weather officials, thunderstorms, lightning, and light to moderate rainfall were expected to follow the dust storm. The rain is likely to settle dust particles and bring some relief from the heat.
What Caused The Sudden Weather Change?
Weather experts said the dust storm was linked to pre-monsoon activity over northwest India. High surface temperatures had made the atmosphere unstable over the region. When cooler air linked to a weather disturbance moved in, warm air near the surface rose quickly and helped form thunderstorm clouds.
The strong downward winds from these clouds lifted dust from dry surfaces, creating a thick dust wall over parts of Delhi-NCR. Such weather events are common during the transition period before the southwest monsoon becomes active over northern India.
Areas Placed Under Alert
Apart from Delhi, alerts were also issued for nearby areas in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Several locations in Sonipat, Rohtak, Kharkhoda, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Bagpat, Khekra, Pilakhua, Sikandrabad, Alwar, Bhiwadi, Tijara, and Deeg were expected to see strong winds, thunderstorms, or rain.
Authorities advised people to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm, stay away from weak structures, and secure loose objects such as outdoor boards, plant pots, and temporary roofing sheets.
Light Rain May Bring Relief
The dust storm came after several hot days in the region. The sudden weather activity brought temporary relief from the heat, while the expected light rain could help cool the atmosphere further.
With the monsoon slowly moving northward, similar dust storms and thunderstorms may continue in parts of northwest India over the coming days. More widespread rainfall is expected once monsoon conditions become stronger in the region.
Residents have been advised to follow official weather alerts and take basic safety precautions during strong winds, lightning, and rain.
