Delhi Begins B&B Fire Safety Checks After Malviya Nagar Blaze

In the wake of the Malviya Nagar B&B fire in South Delhi that claimed 21 lives and injured numerous guests, the Delhi government has initiated a citywide inspection drive targeting bed-and-breakfasts, guest houses, and other high-risk properties. The move aims to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations, building codes, and occupancy limits, preventing similar tragedies in the future.

A multi-agency joint committee including officials from the district administration, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Delhi Police, and the Power Department has been tasked with auditing safety measures, verifying emergency exits, checking electrical systems, and reviewing licensing conditions across the city. Officials have already earmarked 18 properties in Malviya Nagar for immediate inspection, with the campaign expected to extend to additional high-risk establishments.

Inspection Focus and Potential Actions

Investigations revealed that the Flourish Stay B&B was licensed for only six rooms but reportedly operated up to 25 rooms, including a poorly ventilated basement with sealed windows. The building also lacked a valid Fire Safety NOC and had only a single functional entry and exit point, which severely hampered evacuation during the fire.

The Delhi government’s inspection will cover all 702 licensed B&B properties to ensure they operate within permitted scope and adhere to safety norms. Non-compliant establishments may face sealing or legal action. Authorities will compile findings from the inspections to inform policy updates and stronger enforcement of safety standards, aiming to protect both residents and guests.

This campaign underscores the government’s commitment to closing fire safety gaps in commercial accommodations and emphasizes accountability among property owners to prevent future incidents like the Malviya Nagar fire.
