Garib Nagar Demolition 2026: Mumbai Slum Eviction Debate Grows In Bandra East

Mumbai slum eviction row highlights rehabilitation concerns after Garib Nagar demolition

The Garib Nagar demolition in Mumbai’s Bandra East has become a major civic debate after a Bombay High Court-backed eviction drive removed over 400 shanties and displaced more than 1,500 people. The action has also triggered fresh demands on social media for similar drives on the railway, BMC, and other government-owned land. For some residents, the demolitions are being seen as part of a long-awaited urban clean-up, while others say rehabilitation must remain the main concern.

Viral Videos Fuel Demands

After the Garib Nagar action, videos shot from Mumbai local train windows showing slum clusters in Wadala, Kurla, Dadar, and Govandi went viral. Many social media users demanded similar drives on the railway, BMC, and government-owned land. For some residents, the demolitions are being seen as part of a long-awaited urban clean-up.

Rehabilitation Question Remains

The issue, however, goes beyond encroachment. Mumbai’s informal settlements house a large part of the city’s workforce, including delivery riders, domestic workers, drivers, security guards, plumbers, electricians, and sanitation workers. Reports note that slums occupy nearly 24% of Mumbai’s land while housing more than half of its population.

Urban observers say demolition without affordable rehabilitation may create a deeper crisis. Mumbai depends on migrant workers, but safe and low-cost housing remains limited. The Garib Nagar case has therefore raised a key question: can the city remove slums without first creating homes for the workers who keep Mumbai running?
