7.5-Magnitude Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Alert Along Japan Coast

A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan, triggering a tsunami warning and widespread emergency response measures. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake occurred at a depth of around 10 km beneath the Pacific Ocean.

Authorities warned that tsunami waves of up to 3 metres could impact coastal regions, including Iwate Prefecture, Aomori Prefecture, and parts of Hokkaido. Initial observations recorded waves of approximately 80 centimetres at Kuji Port, with smaller surges detected at nearby locations.

Following the alert, evacuation orders were issued for residents in vulnerable coastal areas. Emergency teams were quickly mobilised to assess potential damage and ensure public safety. Officials urged people to move to higher ground and avoid coastal zones as a precaution.

The situation remains under close monitoring, with authorities continuing to track wave activity and possible aftershocks. Japan, known for its advanced disaster preparedness systems, has activated response protocols to minimise risks and protect lives.
