NDA Returns To Power In Assam, Himanta Sarma To Take Oath Today

Himanta Biswa Sarma To Take Oath For Second Term As Assam CM

Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to take oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term as the BJP-led NDA prepares to form its third straight government in the state. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place on May 12 at Khanapara on the outskirts of Guwahati. Lakshman Prasad Acharya will administer the oath of office and secrecy to Sarma and members of the new Council of Ministers.

Several senior national leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, are expected to attend the high-profile ceremony. Massive preparations and multi-layered security arrangements have been put in place across Guwahati ahead of the event. Authorities are expecting more than one lakh people to attend the swearing-in programme.

The NDA secured a sweeping victory in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections by winning 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly. The Bharatiya Janata Party alone won 82 seats, crossing the majority mark independently for the first time in Assam. Alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People's Front also contributed to the NDA’s strong performance in the state.

Along with Himanta Biswa Sarma, senior leaders Rameswar Teli, Ajanta Neog, Atul Bora, and Charan Boro are also expected to take oath as ministers in the new government. Sarma will become the first non-Congress leader in Assam to serve two consecutive terms as Chief Minister. The NDA first formed the government in Assam in 2016 under Sarbananda Sonowal before Sarma took charge in 2021.

The BJP leadership has stated that the new government will continue focusing on development, land rights, infrastructure growth and security-related issues in the state. The swearing-in ceremony is being projected as a major political event highlighting the BJP’s growing influence in Assam and across the Northeast region.
