Industrial manufacturing is the use of machinery or chemicals to transform or create finished goods from raw materials. These goods can also be further developed into products and technology, through advanced manufacturing processes. The Australian manufacturing industry is an integral part of numerous areas of business, including textiles, motor vehicles and petrochemicals for fuel. Manufacturers make up a large proportion of the Australian workforce, with many large companies and private organisations driving innovation in national production and engineering.

Spanning a wide variety of sectors, amongst other things manufacturing workers can be found in the production of: metal, plastic, fibreglass, rubber, polystyrene, glass, food and paper.

Work in manufacturing is closely aligned with the engineering industry as it can involve product design and prototype and production model creation, as well as final manufacture. Engineers who are most closely associated with manufacturing deal primarily with mechanical engineering. This discipline analyses the design, manufacturing and maintenance of mechanical systems.
